Born and educated in S.A., Dr Rudi Claassen attended the medical school of Stellenbosch University where he graduated MB ChB (Stell) in 1976.
In 1980 he completed a diploma in Anaesthetics at the S.A.College of Medicine.
From 1980 to 1988 he was a general practitioner and started his post graduate studies in Ophthalmology at the Tygerberg Hospital in Jan. 1989.
In 1992 he graduated MMed (Ophth) and also successfully completed the exams for FCS (SA) (Ophth) during the same year.
January 1993 saw him starting his own private practice in Durbanville where he is still practicing at this time.
Dr Claassen has served as the chairman of the Western Cape Branch of the Ophthalmological Society and has also been on the organizing Committee for the congress of the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa held in Cape Town. Dr Claassen has also presented scientific papers to the Cataract and Refractive Society of S.A.
He has a special interest in laser and refractive surgery and performs cataract surgery on a regular basis. He has also been involved in doing laser surgery in the UK for a private company there.
He does general Ophthalmology including glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, squints etc.
Dr Claassen is presently a member of several professional organizations including The Ophthalmological Society of S.A. (OSSA) ; The South African Cataract and Refractive Society (SASCRS) ; South African Medical Association (SAMA) ; American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) ; American Cataract and Refractive Society (ASCRS) and a fellow of the South African College of Medicine.
